Athens Burning

On November 17, 2015, construction on Baldwin Hall on the University of Georgia campus came to a halt when workers uncovered human remains on the site. DNA tests revealed what many local residents already knew to be true: these were the remains of formerly enslaved people. This uncovering and the events that followed have forced the often-omitted histories of slavery and segregation to rise to the surface, both at the University of Georgia and in Athens. “Below Baldwin”, featuring Fred Smith, Linda Davis, Alvin Sheats, Linda Lloyd, Mariah Parker, Broderick Flanigan, and others, chronicles the series of events between November 2015 and December 2019. But more than that - this documentary showcases a community’s persistent efforts to connect to its past and to win recognition and redress – for both past and present injustices.

A documentary about the singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt

This documentary is about the Athens Ripper, but aims to address not only the rising tide of femicides in Greece, and how often these tragedies are overlooked, misrepresented, or forgotten by the media; but also raise awareness on sexual assault. Femicides are not isolated incidents. They are part of a broader pattern of violence against women, often driven by deeply ingrained misogyny; as well as violence towards men. All which are occurring more often than we might think. Often the media reduces victims' stories to shocking headlines, disregarding the warning signs, and the failures within a society that allow such tragedies to persist. We need to break the silence surrounding violence against women and men, and through this documentary, I hope to shed light not only on the past crimes of the Athens Ripper, but also on the issue of sexual assault that is occurring, right at our front door.

Journey with us to Athens, where the same Gospel that Paul preached here in the first century is still mighty to save. The Athens of Paul’s day was a city full of idols and empty philosophies. In our day—beyond the postcard scenes of the ancient Acropolis—Athens is a city roiled with a flood of desperately needy refugees, street violence, and trafficking in human misery. Into this maw of need, God has sent His people to serve with compassion and to speak the Gospel with clarity and courage—whether in a mosque or a crack house. “Radical Rescue Work” opens a window into the lives of these faithful servants of the Risen Christ as they run to—not from—the cries in the darkness.
