Iran, January 16th, 1979. Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi flees after being overthrown. Ayatollah Khomeini returns to Tehran and proclaims the Islamic Republic on April 1st, 1979. In the same year, Saddam Hussein seizes power in Iraq and, after several border skirmishes, attacks Iran on September 22nd, 1980, initiating a cruel war that will last eight years. Since its outbreak, correspondent Saeid Sadeghi documented it from its beginning to its bitter end.

From the Ganges to the Himalayas is the sort of a journey that no one ever forgets. The good ship "Burton Holmes" will take your patrons on an unusual trip this time, and when their eyes behold the various kinds of religions performed in this strange land, they will sit in their seats entranced. Leaving Benares, the city of worship, the train, which is a special mountain climber, starts for Darjeeling. high in the mountains. After going through a wonderful country, the city in the sky is finally reached. From this little Tibetan village, surrounded by quaint and little-known people, they may gaze upon the loftiest mountains in the world.

This video is quite unique since the journey was aboard Amtrak's Cardinal after a very heavy snowfall. The journey picks up at first light east of Maysville, Kentucky, and concludes with the stop in Clifton Forge, West Virginia, after traveling along the Ohio River, and later the famous New River Gorge. It's a rare treat to be onboard during the winter and on a crystal clear day. The music by Michael Lynch is exceptional for this video as well. Since it was winter we did not have the opportunity to do off train locations, but we have an added bonus of including some steam locomotive excursions that formerly traveled this same route east of Huntington and through the New River region.

The first picture of the new Paramount-Burton Holmes Travel pictures recount Mr. Holmes' motor trip of the summer of 1913 through the more picturesque and interesting portions of New Mexico. As the journey leads through the lands of the former cliff-dwellers and former and present occupants of these prehistoric apartment houses called pueblos, Mr. Holmes chose to begin his trip at Chicago, there to see the cliff-dwellers of today threading in countless throngs the deep "Canyons" flanked on each side by the abodes of the modern "Cliff-dwellers." This is but a momentary glimpse, as the train is seen taking the audience to Santa Fe. From Santa Fe the travelers are taken to the famous pueblo of Taos and thence to the even more celebrated pueblo of Acoma, which was just as old, to all appearances, when the Spanish Conquistadores came up out of Old Mexico in 1740, to convert the Indians and conquer the country in the name of their King...

I took the southern train at Hua Lamphong for the first time, and I wanted to recorded the experience. However, because of the flood, we eventually returned to our starting place at Hua Lamphong.
