In the 1940s in the small town of Jupiter Hollow, two sets of identical twins are born in the same hospital on the same night. Our story flashes forward to the 1980s where the mismatched sets of twins are about to cross paths.

He wants to have a father by his own choice, not his mother's. It seems that the teacher suits most of the boy's idea of a father. And the boy gains what he always wants.

Marie, the charming daughter of Italian immigrants, has a dream : to become rich. In Roubaix, where she lives, she meets and marries small-time crooner Marcel Potier. Together they leave for the South of France where they live happily but poorly. These visitors include a police officer, a playwright, a banker, a convict, and an unmarried mother.
